Pond Scoops
What child doesn't like the water and wonder what is in it? Each child will explore the teaching pond at Gleason Meadows to see how animals survive in a wet world. The water cycle, microscopic organisms and food webs will be covered.
Backyard Animals
This is one of our most popular programs. This program offers your students the chance to see local live animals including: turtles, a snake, a hawk or an owl, frogs and toads, salamanders,bunnies and more...This is a great program to tie into your curriculum standards and units.
Birds of a Feather
Check out our local bird residents Sophie, the Great-horned Owl, Icarus the Broad-winged Hawk, Lucy the Barred Owl, TJ our African Grey Parrot. If you decide to do this program here at Tanglewood we include a bird watching hike. Again, one of most popular programs. Plants, Trees, You and Me
Children will learn about the importance of plants as the basis of the food chain in our natural world. Basic parts of a plant and photosynthesis will be discussed. We will identify local plants including decidious and evergreen trees and more as we hike on Tanglewood's property.
Animals that Hatch
Students will use the discovery method to recognize and appreciate the life histories and ecology of animals that hatch. They will observe eggs to determine similarities and differences; and how egg laying animals overcome ecological barriers to be successful.
Incredible Insects and Spiders
This interactive program uses live animal models to introduce students to the diversity of the largest phyla of animals - The Arthropods. Classification of these animals will emphasize their importance in the food webs and ecosystems they inhabit. In appropriate weather, organisms will be collected and identified.
Amphibian and Reptile Antics
Students will be shown the similarities and differences between some common reptiles and amphibians using live specimens. Using the discovery method, the students will determine how these animals use their unique characteristics to survive in the environment.
Animal Coverings
Learn what animals are covered with- with fur, feathers, scales, skin- by feeling live animals and other touchables. We will also learn why animal coverings are important and explore some of the more “unique” coverings in the animal world.
Animal Movement
Animals have many ways to get from place to place. Flying, walking, hopping, climbing, slithering…! We will look at animal locomotion. This class is great for the fall/summer so it can be held it outdoors in the schoolyard.
