Winter Challenge Wednesday! week two: trees

  • 11 Feb 2015
  • 3:30 PM - 4:45 PM
  • Tanglewood Nature Center and Museum

A free program open to all ages!

Meet inside the nature center with Tricia, then head out for a themed hike that will get your heart pumping. The goal is to get outside and observe a world that we are all to often oblivious to, as we spend the winter rushing to and from heated buildings and cars.

Week Two: trees (identification challenge)

  •
  • We often think that trees look dead orugly in the winter, but if we look closely they are really quite remarkable! With guides to trees in winter, our group will work together to see how many tree species we can identify
  • We will talk about the notable tree species in the region: the sugar maple (our state tree!) that gives us maple syrup, the ash trees that are threatened, and the oaks that feed so many of our native wildlife
  • If we look closely, we may even realize that our winter trees are not entirely without leaves. Many spent last summer and fall preparing buds so that as soon as the sun is strong enough and the risk of heavy ice and snow has faded, they can start harvesting sunlight. I wonder if the rabbits and deer have found any of these tasty buds...

This hike is led by Tricia, a Tanglewood volunteer with extensive environmental education experience. She has worked as a naturalist at Friends of the Five Rivers in Elmar, NY and at the Klamath Bird Observatory in Ashland, OR.
