CVAS Book Club

Celebrate National Poetry Month! Please bring a favorite short nature poem to share. You can find our book list here. We meet in the Conference Room at Appleridge, 168 Miller St., Horseheads, NY. All CVAS members are welcome. The facility is wheelchair accessible.

CVAS Bird Walk: Erin Hotspots

Meet at 8:00 AM at the Park & Ride on State Route 13 north of the Byrne Dairy traffic circle in Horseheads. We will explore birding hot spots in the Erin, NY area, looking for migrating waterfowl and early land migrants.

CVAS Monthly Meeting

Meet at Appleridge (Map), for a lively discussion about birding and a presentation from one of our knowledgeable hosts. A bird identification workshop precedes the program at 7:00 p.m.; the program begins at 7:30p.m. All are welcome to these free events. Appleridge is wheelchair accessible. Please join us to hear about using native plants to attract birds. Ellen Folts from Amanda's Native Garden will present information about native plants for our area and why they're important for the health of our local ecosystems. Healthier ecosystems make for better environments for the birds we love to look for in our communities.

CVAS Bird Walk: Queen Catherine Marsh

Join us on our visit to the Catharine Marsh. Meet at 8:00 AM at the Sugar & Spice Restaurant, 300 Watkins Rd, Horseheads. We'll be looking for Sandhill Cranes and other marsh birds.

CVAS Bird Walk: Gleason Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary

Meet at the Fitch's Bridge Fishing Access at the east end of Hendy Creek Road (State Route 225) in West Elmira. We'll explore the Sanctuary trails, looking for early spring forest migrants and wildflowers. On the Gleason Audubon Wildlife Sanctuary in the Town of Caton we maintain extensive hiking trails, a cabin, a pond, and pollinator gardens.

CVAS sanctuaries are used to further our mission to conserve and restore the natural ecosystems within New York and the Southern Finger Lakes Region through education, conservation, policy, advocacy, and scientific investigation, with the goal of furthering the study, enjoyment, awareness, and protection of birds, other wildlife, and their habitats.

World Migratory Bird Day

In 2024, World Migratory Bird Day will be celebrated on May 11 in the Spring and October 12 in the Fall. The conservation theme this year is Protect Insects, Protect Birds, and focuses on the importance of insects as essential food sources for migratory birds.

Montezuma Audubon Society
The Montezuma Audubon Society has birding and boating events all season long! Visit the Montezuma Audubon website for more information and to register.

Birding Festivals
A great way to enjoy bird watching is by going to festivals—they're organized to get you to great birding spots at a great time of year, and they're a great way to meet people. Experts and locals help you see more birds, and you'll meet other visitors who share your hobby. While you're there, keep an eye out for Cornell Lab representatives, as they do attend several festivals each year. You can find a complete list of birding festivals here.

Spring Ornithology with Steve Kress

Registration is now open for the Cayuga Bird Club’s Spring Ornithology with Steve Kress, held Tuesday evenings March 26 through May 14 at Kendal at Ithaca. You can attend each class either in person OR via Zoom this coming spring! This is a great way to learn more about birds and their lives! Dr. Kress’s presentations, enhanced with audio recordings, videos, and gorgeous photos, will include bird ID, song, behavior, migration, conservation, attracting birds, and more.

The class is suitable for beginners, but even seasoned birders will find their lives enriched by exploring fascinating aspects of the lives of birds they thought they knew.
